Plan Your Trip
Four moods, two seas. November to February is the gentle stretch. Your beach month depends on which water you love.
ThailandLover reads the year as a mood first, then asks which sea you want under it. November through February is the gentle stretch: warm pavements, cooler nights in the north, and the Andaman at its clearest. Around Samui the bright months arrive later, roughly February into August, so a green-season swim still has a home. April is the country’s hot reset, Songkran included. If the trip is about Doi ridges and Chiang Mai air, keep it for the clear months — March and April lay a soft haze over those views.
Pick the feeling first.
The coast will tell you the month.
Climate Basics
Cool & dry, sun-drenched heat, or lush monsoon green — each season shapes a different kind of trip.
Golden window
November to February
Late December and January are when the country feels most loved. Choose the town you care about, and hold the room.
Sun-drenched
March to May
Linen, a hat, and shade at midday. The water-festival week is full. The weeks beside it feel roomier.
Lush & quiet
June to October
Give Andaman boats a spare day. Mu Ko Similan rests after 15 May and welcomes boats again on 15 October.
The Year
Four moods for the year. The coast table below is where the beaches get specific.
November to February
The north exhales. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are for walking, and Loy Krathong with Yi Peng usually lands in November. The Andaman is the beach. Samui spends November in rain and grows clearer toward the new year. December and January are the months people plan a year ahead.
March to May
Songkran is the reason to be in a city, and the sea is still a relief. Northern sunrises from the ridges are a maybe, because the burning season lays a haze over them. Rains begin to gather on the Andaman around mid-May, and Similan closes after the 15th.
June to September
Rice, forest, and fewer suitcases. This is the season ThailandLover would spend in the national parks. If the week must include a swim, point it at Samui, Phangan, or Tao. Phuket and Krabi are lush, and the pier asks for patience.
October into December
Both seas are changing their minds. Some years the central plains hold extra water in October, and Similan opens again on the 15th. By December the north and the Andaman are back in their glory, and the Gulf is climbing out of its rainy chapter.
Beach Timing
ThailandLover splits the beach year in two. The Andaman shines from November to April. Samui, Phangan, and Tao shine later, and take their rain in October, November, and early December. Hua Hin keeps the Andaman’s months — the West card explains why.

Seasonal guidance is editorial travel advice, not a weather forecast. Always check local conditions before booking boats — see the Beach & Islands guide for coast mood and island picks.
Follow the Mood
The same week feels generous in one region and tired in another. These are the six regions ThailandLover already keeps.
Best November–February
Come for cool air and the Lanna towns, November to February. In March and April those same ridges sit in a seasonal haze — lovely in a muted way, and the wrong week for a postcard viewpoint. After the rains, the waterfalls are the reason to return.
Best November–February
The cool months open the Khmer stone and the Mekong towns. When the rice goes green, Loei’s Phi Ta Khon usually arrives. April here is a hard, bright heat, the week before the sky decides to break.
Year-round, easiest Nov–Feb
Bangkok and Ayutthaya will host you any week. November to February is the kindest weather for the river and the ruins. April asks for early starts, shade, and the water. In some Octobers, low streets still hold a memory of floodwater.
Best December–April
Koh Samet and Koh Chang like December to April, when the boats feel decided. From June the gardens get louder and the timetable gets looser, so leave a margin around the ferry.
Best November–April
The River Kwai valley is loveliest when the nights cool, November to February. Erawan earns the trip once the rains have filled it, and a very full fall sometimes rests for a day or two. Hua Hin’s beach year runs November to April, in step with the Andaman.
Split by sea
Hold Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi for November to April. Hold Samui, Phangan, and Tao for about February to August. ThailandLover would give them two trips and two calendars.
Cultural Calendar
Songkran keeps its dates, 13–15 April. Loy Krathong, Yi Peng, and Phi Ta Khon follow the moon, so the week drifts a little each year.
April
Hot SeasonNationwide water fights and cleansing rituals to welcome the Thai New Year — the perfect cooler for peak heat.
June / July
Green SeasonColorful, masked folklore parades in Loei Province — a green-season highlight that rewards flexible travelers.
November
Start of Cool SeasonFloating lanterns illuminating the night sky in Chiang Mai and rivers glowing with krathongs nationwide.
December / January
Cool SeasonPerfect weather for outdoor dining, rooftop bars, and international music festivals across the kingdom.
Travel Ready
A few small choices make temples, heat, and sudden showers much easier to handle.
Always pack at least one modest outfit — lightweight pants or a long skirt, and a top that covers your shoulders — for visiting sacred sites.
Easy slip-on shoes or sandals are ideal — you will remove your shoes often when entering temples, traditional homes, and certain shops.
A reusable water bottle, a portable umbrella (for sudden tropical showers or intense sun), and mosquito repellent are absolute travel essentials.
Season add-ons: April wants linen and a serious sunscreen. Green months want a compact umbrella for the afternoon build-up. Chiang Mai in December and January wants a light layer after dark.
If You Are Choosing
The choices ThailandLover hears most often, answered in the same mood as the rest of this page.
November to February. Nights cool down, the air clears, and Chiang Mai is for walking. March and April are hot, and seasonal burning lays a haze over Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son, so the famous ridge views step back.
To the Gulf. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are often bright in July and August, while Phuket and Krabi are green and the pier is less certain. Keep a spare day if the boat is the only way on.
For Songkran. Thailand’s New Year falls on 13–15 April, and cities mark it with water. Those afternoons are the hottest of the year, which is why the water feels like the whole point.
From 15 October to 15 May. The park then rests through the monsoon. Phuket still has its town and nearby beaches; the far islands are the ones that pause.
Hua Hin keeps a November-to-April beach year, closer to the Andaman than to Samui. Samui’s bright stretch runs later, from about February into August.
One northern town and one sea. November to February suits Chiang Mai with the Andaman. If the island is Samui, begin in January, once November’s heavier rain has passed.
