Getting Around Bangkok & Metro

BTS/MRT, Win bikes, apps, boats, buses, songthaew, and ordinary trains from ฿4: a practical menu for Bangkok and the metropolitan ring.

Introduction

Getting around Bangkok and the metropolitan area is less about one perfect vehicle and more about stacking the right modes. BTS and MRT beat traffic. Win bikes finish the last soi. Apps replace curb arguments. Boats and city buses cover what maps forget. Songthaew feeds the neighborhood. Ordinary SRT trains stretch the budget from about ฿4. Helicopters and private drivers are for the days the clock cannot bend. ThailandLover built this page as a practical Bangkok–metro menu: pick the mode that fits the moment, then move on.

“Match the trip to the mode: not the other way around.”

On-Demand & Street Smart

Win motorbike taxis

วินมอเตอร์ไซค์: ลัดซอย หนีแดด เร็วกว่าเดิน

The orange-vest hop that locals use when a soi is too long, the sun is too sharp, or the BTS exit dumps you three blocks from dinner.

Friendly Thai motorbike taxi Win driver with passenger on a red scooter

How to ride a Win like you know the game

Look for the bright orange-yellow vest and the numbered plate on the back. That vest means a registered motorbike taxi stand: not a random stranger with a spare helmet.

  • Best for: Short hops: BTS/MRT exits to hotel sois, market runs, last 500 metres when walking melts you.
  • Price first: Agree the fare before you sit, or open GrabBike / Bolt Bike and let the app set it.
  • Landmark talk: Drivers navigate by temples, malls, and big intersections. Show a pin or name a landmark, not a vague soi number.
  • Helmet on: Wear the one they hand you. No debate: it is the difference between a story and a hospital.

Many travel-insurance policies quietly exclude motorbike accidents. If your cover does not say “pillion / motorbike taxi,” treat Win as a short calculated risk: not a day-long tour mode.

Spot the real stand

Orange vest + stand number. Skip anyone who waves you down with no vest near tourist gates.

Keep it short

Win wins on 5–15 minute hops. For longer city crosses, switch to a car app or the rails.

Bag as backup

GrabBike and Bolt Bike remove the curb bargain: same orange energy, clearer price.

Ride Apps

Six apps. Six different wins.

เลือกแอปตามสถานการณ์ ไม่ใช้แอปเดียวทั้งทริป

Install two or three before you land. Locals do not marry one brand: they open Grab for reliability, Bolt when the quote looks kinder, and a surge-breaker when the rain hits.

Grab (แกร็บ)

Most cars · Most reliable

Why locals open it first
Biggest fleet in Thailand: the car that actually shows up. Eco to premium, vans for luggage, bikes for sois. Pins, cards, and trip sharing all work cleanly.
How you pay
System fare. Expect it to jump hard in rain, Friday evenings, and New Year weeks.
Use it when
You need certainty: late nights, airport buffers, card payment, or a car now.

Bolt (โบลท์)

Same muscle · Softer price

Why locals open it first
Looks and feels like Grab: similar car types and flow: but the average quote often lands lower.
How you pay
Typically about 10–20% cheaper than Grab on comparable weekday routes. Still surges, just usually less painful.
Use it when
You want to save on long city hops without bargaining on the curb.

inDrive (อินไดรฟ์)

You name the price

Why locals open it first
You propose a fare; drivers counter. Choose by price or by rating: closer to a polite auction than a fixed meter.
How you pay
Whatever you and the driver agree. No opaque surge chart: just offers.
Use it when
Other apps are flying high, or the trip is long enough that a negotiated number feels fair.

TADA (ทาด้า)

Calm fares · Mild surge

Why locals open it first
Commission-light model keeps prices steadier when Grab and Bolt go wild in the rain.
How you pay
Relatively flat quotes. Surge exists, but it rarely looks as dramatic as the big two.
Use it when
Rush hour or a tropical downpour has turned every other screen into a luxury holiday.

LINE MAN (ไลน์แมน)

Real meter taxis · Inside LINE

Why locals open it first
Book a legal yellow-green or pink metered taxi without installing another app if LINE is already on your phone. Drivers usually know the city cold.
How you pay
True meter plus a small booking fee: the meter is the point.
Use it when
You want a real taxi that comes to you and does not refuse the trip at the curb.

airasia ride (แอร์เอเชีย ไรด์)

Built for travelers

Why locals open it first
Pre-book with your flight ticket. Drivers on tourist and airport runs often handle English more comfortably.
How you pay
Fixed system quote before you confirm: no surprise spiral mid-ride.
Use it when
Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi transfers, or first/last miles in heavy tourist districts.

Metro Exits & Nearby Hops

Minivans from Bangkok

รถตู้: ออกจากกทม. เร็ว แต่ไม่ใช่สำหรับทุกคน

When you need to leave the metro ring for a nearby province or a same-day day trip, licensed minivans are the speed option: faster than a coach, tighter than a bus.

Silver passenger minivan used for Bangkok metro exits and nearby hops

Fast hops out of the metro ring

Local minivans (รถตู้) leave Bangkok terminals toward nearby provinces and day-trip corridors: Ayutthaya, floating markets, coastal staging points, and other short-haul exits the BTS/MRT never reach.

They leave when full or on a posted schedule from official terminals and trusted counters. Expect assertive driving, cold AC, and limited luggage space.

  • Best for: Same-day hops from Bangkok when you want speed without hiring a private driver.
  • Book from: Official van terminals or reputable desks: skip sidewalk touts waving laminated photos.
  • Not ideal for: Kids, elders, anyone prone to motion sickness, or travelers with big hard-shell luggage.
  • Pro move: Keep a buffer before evening returns into Bangkok traffic.

If the driver packs twelve people into nine seats or refuses a receipt from a licensed counter, walk away and find another van.

Speed over comfort

Beats long coaches on many Bangkok-exit corridors: you trade reclining seats for a tighter cabin.

Licensed counters only

Buy at terminals or trusted desks. Random curb sellers are where itineraries go wrong.

Pack light

Soft bags fit; giant suitcases often do not. Ask about luggage rules before you pay.

Bangkok by Water

Public boats that beat the traffic

ขึ้นเรือ = เลี่ยงรถติด 100%

Bangkok’s rivers and canals are a real transit network: not a tourist gimmick. Five main lines cover the Chao Phraya, Saen Saep, short EV loops, eastern feeders, and cheap cross-river hops. Read the flag or the pier before you board.

Chao Phraya Express Boat

เรือด่วนเจ้าพระยา

The river spine between Nonthaburi and southern Bangkok (Pak Kret / Nonthaburi down toward Sathorn and Wat Rajsingkorn). Commuters and visitors share the same piers: the flag on the boat decides stops and fare.

  • No flag (local): Stops at every pier · ≈ ฿10–15
  • Orange flag: Daily · most key piers · flat ฿16 end to end
  • Yellow / green flag: Weekday rush only · fewer stops · ≈ ฿21–33 by distance
  • Red flag (AC) / Riva Express: Air-conditioned express · Nonthaburi–Sathorn · flat ฿33

Red flag · Riva Express เรือด่วนเจ้าพระยาชนิดปรับอากาศ (เรือธงแดง / ริว่า เอ็กซ์เพรส) — Nonthaburi to Sathorn on the main pier set only.

  • Route: Nonthaburi · Rama 7 · Bang Pho · Kiakkai · Thewet · Phrannok · Rachinee · Rajawongse · ICONSIAM · Sathorn
  • Fare: ฿33 per trip (raised with fuel costs from 5 Oct 2026)

เรือโดยสารคลองแสนแสบ

Bangkok’s canal shortcut through the middle of town: from Wat Saket (Phan Fa) out toward Ramkhamhaeng and Min Buri, brushing Pratunam, CentralWorld, and Chit Lom.

  • Why ride: Skips Phetchaburi and Sukhumvit gridlock better than almost any taxi.
  • Fare: ≈ ฿13–23 by distance
  • Transfer tip: Change boats at Pratunam pier between the Golden Mount (old-town) line and the NIDA / Ram–Bangkapi line.

เรือไฟฟ้าคลองผดุงกรุงเกษม

A short, quiet BMA electric loop around the old-city canal: from Hua Lamphong pier toward Thewet Market near Thewet. Solar-roof boats, no diesel haze, calm water.

  • Easy walk to MRT Hua Lamphong
  • Flat budget fare: often about ฿10, sometimes free under BMA promotions

Fare cue ≈ ฿10 flat · check pier boards for free days

Eastern EV canal feeders

คลองประเวศบุรีรมย์ / แสนแสบต่อขยาย

Newer electric canal lines that pull eastern suburbs toward the rail web: Min Buri–Nong Chok corridors and Khlong Phra Khanong / Prawet links feeding the Orange and Yellow lines.

  • Built as feeders, not scenic cruises
  • Often special low fares: or free trial windows while the network expands

Bangkok City Buses

Bangkok buses by color & fare

รถเมล์กรุงเทพ: ดูสีก่อนขึ้น รู้ราคาทันที

In Bangkok and the metro area, full-size buses split into four practical groups: by fleet, AC, and who runs them. Read the color before you board; the fare logic follows. Neighborhood feeders live in the Songthaew section next.

01

Non-AC “hot” buses

รถธรรมดา · รถร้อนไม่มีแอร์

The classic no-AC fleet: cheapest ride in the city if you can handle the heat and open windows.

  • Cream-red (BMTA / ขสมก.): Flat ฿8 all the way. Night “bright” runs ≈ ฿9.50; expressway routes ≈ ฿10.
  • Private hot buses (orange / white / pink): Joint-service operators on some lines: usually from about ฿10+, a touch above BMTA.

Several generations and colors: fare scales with distance, not a single flat ticket.

  • Cream-blue: Older AC: about ฿12–20 by distance.
  • Euro II (orange / yellow): Common AC workhorse: about ฿13–25.
  • NGV (light blue): Newer low-floor BMTA AC: about ฿15–25.

03

Private EV buses

รถไฟฟ้าปรับอากาศเอกชน · EV Bus

  • Quiet, air-conditioned, modern low-floor feel on many corridors.
  • Same “look for the navy EV” rule when ViaBus shows a reformed route.

Fare cue ฿15 / 20 / 25 by distance

Special AC A and S line airport shuttle bus illustration

04

Special AC · A & S lines

รถปรับอากาศพิเศษ · ตระกูล A / S

Point-to-point shuttles for key links: not regular hop-on neighborhood buses.

  • Airport shuttles: e.g. A1 / A2 toward Don Mueang, S1 toward Suvarnabhumi.
  • Fixed flat fare for the whole line: you are paying for certainty, not the cheapest baht.

Fare cue ≈ ฿30–60 flat per line

Keep small notes ready. Most city buses are still cash-first. ViaBus (or similar) helps confirm route numbers; the color of the bus still tells you the fare logic faster than the app alone.

Neighborhood Feeders

Songthaew & kapor

รถสองแถว / รถกะป๊อ (รถซูบารุ)

Not a full-size city bus: and that is exactly the point. These little workhorses thread the sois that big buses never enter, then drop you on a main road, bus stop, or BTS/MRT entrance.

Songthaew and kapor neighborhood feeder vehicles illustration

The last mile locals actually use

Songthaew means “two rows”: bench seats facing each other in the back of a converted pickup. Kapor (often nicknamed rot Subaru) are the compact blue-and-white minibuses that do the same feeder job on tighter lanes.

Think of them as the connective tissue of Bangkok neighborhoods: hotel soi → arterial road, market → skytrain, housing estate → main BMTA line. You are not touring the city. You are finishing the trip the rails started.

  • Where they shine: Alleys and side streets too narrow for a cream-red bus: yet too far to walk in the midday heat.
  • How to ride: Flag one on its usual loop, sit in the back, then tap the roof or call your stop when you want off. Cash to the driver or conductor.
  • Fare: Almost always a flat price for the whole short line: about ฿8–10.

If the route is unclear, ask “pai [landmark] mai?” or show a map pin. Drivers know temples, markets, and station names better than obscure soi numbers.

Feeder, not sightseeing

Built to ferry people out of sois onto main buses and rail: short, frequent, practical.

Flat & cheap

Expect roughly ฿8–10 for the whole line. Keep coins ready; change can be limited.

Signal your stop

Tap the metal roof, press the buzzer if there is one, or call out clearly before your landmark.

Budget Rail

Ordinary trains

รถไฟธรรมดา: กทม. · ปริมณฑล · ต่างจังหวัด

State Railway of Thailand ordinary services are the cheapest long sit in the network. Fares scale by distance: short hops inside Bangkok and the metro ring can start at about ฿4; longer legs toward nearby provinces cost more, still far below express tickets.

Ordinary SRT third-class train illustration for budget Bangkok and provincial travel

The fare that still surprises locals

Ordinary / third-class trains (รถไฟธรรมดา) are not the BTS. They are slower, fan-cooled or lightly AC, and packed with students, workers, and market traders. That is why the ticket can open at about ฿4 for the shortest Bangkok and metro stops.

Use them when the destination sits on the SRT corridor: outer Bangkok stations, Nonthaburi / Pathum Thani / Samut Prakan edges, or a cheap day run to a nearby province. Buy at the station counter, keep the stub, and expect open windows, vendors, and a timetable that rewards patience.

  • Metro hops: Short station-to-station rides inside Bangkok and the metropolitan ring: often the lowest fare on rails.
  • Province exits: Same ordinary cars continue toward nearby provinces when speed is optional and cash is tight.
  • Fare: Charged by distance — from about ฿4 for the shortest legs, then higher as kilometers add up. Still far below express or sleeper tickets.
  • Not for: Airport dashes or midtown hops the BTS/MRT already cover in minutes.

Check the live board at Hua Lamphong / Krung Thep Aphiwat and major stops: ordinary trains share tracks with faster services, so the clock matters more than the map.

By distance · from ฿4

Fare follows how far you ride. Short Bangkok and metro hops can start at about four baht; longer legs cost more.

Metro & beyond

Outer-city stations first; nearby provinces when you want distance without a minivan or coach fare.

Slow by design

Ordinary trains stop often. Bring water, a light bag, and time: comfort is not the product, the fare is.

Above the Traffic

Private helicopter charter

เหมาเฮลิคอปเตอร์: VIP · จุดต่อจุด · เวลาสำคัญ

When Bangkok traffic cannot bend for your schedule, charter operators lift VIP transfers over the gridlock: board meetings, airport staging, and point-to-point legs the expressway will not win.

Private helicopter charter illustration

Charter the sky: when the road is not enough

Leading operators such as Advance Aviation, HelicopterBangkok, and Air Charter Service cover VIP transfers and helipad-to-helipad links from Bangkok: city pads, airport staging, and custom private legs when the clock cannot slip.

This is not everyday metro transit. Book it for executive transfers, film logistics, or a private hop that must beat the expressway.

  • VIP transfers: Bangkok pads, airport staging, or high-rise helipads where permitted
  • Point-to-point: private legs timed to your meeting, ship, or flight connection
  • Custom routes: designed around the itinerary, not a fixed sightseeing timetable

Operator

Advance Aviation

Air Charter Service

Best for Tailored VIP & multi-leg private flights

Rates and aircraft change: treat published figures as a planning cue, then confirm the live quote, landing permissions, and weather window with the operator before you lock the day.

Pro Decision

When a private driver is worth every penny

Hire a driver for the Bangkok days public transit cannot cover cleanly: multi-stop metro day trips, family logistics, late-night airport runs. Skip it when you would only sit in the same jam as everyone else.

Skip it

Inner-city commuting. Bangkok traffic does not care that you hired a van: rails and river boats still win most midtown hops.

  • Hotel ↔ mall ↔ dinner inside the BTS/MRT web
  • Solo travelers with light bags and flexible timing
  • Daytime airport runs when Airport Rail Link or a metered taxi is enough

Invest in a driver

Pay for door-to-door calm when the day has multiple stops, people who tire easily, or a clock that cannot slip.

  • Day trips outside the city: Ayutthaya, floating markets, Khao Yai, multi-temple loops
  • Family travel with heavy luggage, strollers, or elderly members
  • Late-night airport transfers when rails have stopped and you want a fixed pickup
