Ao Manao–Khao Tanyong National Park
Where the Forest Meets the Sea
Along the quiet coastline of Narathiwat, Ao Manao–Khao Tanyong brings together sandy shores, rocky headlands, coastal forest and low green hills in one compact natural landscape.
The centerpiece is Ao Manao, a gently curving coastline stretching for around 4 kilometres, where sandy beach meets scattered rock formations and shady casuarina trees. Beyond the shore, the landscape rises toward Khao Tanyong, creating a striking transition from sea to forest.
This is a quieter side of Southern Thailand — less about crowded attractions and more about discovering a landscape where coast, forest and hill come together.
Why Visit
A different side of Southern Thailand.
Ao Manao–Khao Tanyong is especially appealing to travelers who want to experience Narathiwat beyond its urban and cultural landmarks.
The area combines several natural environments within a relatively small area:
- A long, peaceful coastal bay
- Sandy beaches and natural rock formations
- Coastal and beach forest
- Green foothills around Khao Tanyong
- A seaside arboretum
- Nature-study trails
- Forest and wetland ecosystems
- Scenic viewpoints overlooking the coast
The landscape also borders the grounds around Thaksin Ratchaniwet Palace, adding another layer of historical and cultural significance to the setting.
The Ao Manao Coast
The beach is the most immediately accessible part of the landscape.
Ao Manao curves along the coast for approximately 4 kilometres, with sandy stretches alternating with small rocky outcrops. Casuarina trees provide shade along parts of the shoreline, creating a relaxed setting for walking, photography and simply taking in the sea.
Rather than a heavily developed beach destination, Ao Manao has a more natural and understated character.
Come for the coastline. Stay for the landscape.
Khao Tanyong
Behind the coast rises Khao Tanyong, reaching approximately 293 metres above sea level.
The hill provides a different perspective on the area, with the landscape shifting from open coastline into forested terrain and elevated viewpoints.
For travelers interested in nature rather than conventional sightseeing, this contrast between sea and hill is one of the area’s defining characteristics.
Beach Forest Nature Trail
One of the highlights for nature lovers is the Beach Forest Nature Study Trail, approximately 1 kilometre long.
The trail offers an opportunity to see the coastal ecosystem at a slower pace, including plants adapted to the demanding conditions of the shoreline.
Notable coastal vegetation includes species such as the sea poison tree, wild lime and seashore screwpine.
This is a good place to appreciate something easy to overlook in Thailand: the ecology that exists between the beach and the forest.
A Landscape of Sea, Forest & Wetlands
Ao Manao–Khao Tanyong is more than a beach.
The wider landscape includes coastal areas, hills, protected forest and peatland, creating a diverse environment for plants and wildlife. Local authorities highlight the area’s ecological diversity and the presence of rare wildlife.
For photographers and nature-focused travelers, this variety makes the destination particularly interesting: the scenery changes significantly depending on whether you are looking toward the sea, the forest or the hills.
